Mothman Picks 13 Halloween Flicks

Mothman Picks 13 Halloween Flicks

Disclaimer

This list does NOT contain my picks for for best horror films of all time, but rather my picks for best movies to watch on Halloween.

It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

It’s not scary at all, but this film has been a Halloween tradition since 1966.

Darkness Falls

Darkness Falls

This film has been hugely underrated. It has all the makings of a classic horror film, but unfortunately it was released around the same time as The Ring. The result was that it was soon forgotten. This film truly gives you a reason to fear the dark and inspired much of Dark Worlds.

Scream

Scream

This is the slasher film that pokes fun at the genre without actually making fun of it. While the movie stands well on it’s own, it helps to be somewhat versed in horror films to get the most out of it. There are three films in the series (a fourth is in production), but the first remains the best of the lot.

The Ring

The Ring

This is one of the creepiest movies you’ll find with a PG-13 rating. It’s the American remake of the classic Japanese horror film Ringu. If you’ve never seen a Japanese horror film, and I say this as a complement, they are twisted as shit! The Ring has a very Hitchcock feel to it. It’s required viewing for any horror movie fan.

A Haunting In Connecticut

A Haunting In Connecticut

Every Halloween must include at least one ghost film. “Based on a true story,” A Haunting In Connecticut is one of the best ghost films in recent years. It really doesn’t add much to the genre, but it does use the formula very well.

Night Of The Living Dead

Night Of The Living Dead

What would Halloween be without zombies? Released in 1968, this black & white flick was way ahead of it’s time. 28 Days Later redefined the zombie genre, but this film firmly established it. Watch the original, not the remake.

Friday The 13th

Friday The 13th (Remake)

While most remakes tend to fall a mile short, this one is actually very good! Perhaps the reason it succeeds is because it really isn’t a remake of the original, but rather a remake of Friday The 13th Part 2. This film has a lot of violence, a lot of sex and a lot of fun. Besides, you can’t have Halloween without the “Unholy Trinity.” (More about that later)

Halloween

Halloween

This was arguably the very first slasher film. It’s has all the tropes of the genre (watch Scream to learn the tropes), and with a name like Halloween how can this film be passed up? Michael Myers (not the actor) is the father of the Unholy Trinity. Friday The 13th’s Jason Voorhees is the son, and…

A Nightmare On Elm St.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

Freddy Krueger is the unholy ghost. A Nightmare On Elm St. is one of my favorite horror films of all time! Maybe it’s because I grew-up with Freddy scaring the shit out of me. Whatever the reason, stay awake this Halloween and watch this movie!

Evil Dead 2

Evil Dead 2

Fifty percent horror–fifty percent comedy, Evil Dead 2 is a cult classic! The best way to describe this film is that it’s basically a demonically possessed live-action Warner Brother’s cartoon. Despite being the second in the series, I recommend starting with this film.

Quarantine

Quarantine

This isn’t just another zombie movie. This is the scariest film I have ever seen! It’s a remake of the Spanish film REC. I haven’t seen the original, so I can’t fairly say which is better. The film style is the same as The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield but perfectly executed. Invite some friends over and turn the lights out to enjoy this movie as it was made to be seen.

Trick 'r Treat

Trick ‘r Treat

I LOVE this movie! It’s dark. It’s funny. It’s scary. It’s the perfect Halloween film! Trick ‘r Treat is about four or five interconnecting stories that all take place in one town on Halloween. This film doesn’t just take place on Halloween, it is Halloween! If you only watch one film this Halloween, make Trick ‘r Treat your choice!

Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein

My top pick for best Halloween film is Young Frankenstein. As far back as I can remember right around Halloween I’d watch this film with my folks. I think I pretty much know every line of this movie by heart. Sure it’s not a horror film, but Halloween isn’t just about scares–it’s about traditions. Tradition is why we dress up. It’s why we carve pumpkins. It’s why we celebrate Halloween!
