Zack Daggy: Where did you grow up and how did it influence your style?

Kelsey Wild: I grew up in rural Illinois. I think the biggest impact that my hometown had on me was its isolation. I wasn’t really aware of much music growing up, and so perhaps that helped me create my own sense of style.

ZD: Whom do people say that you sound like?

KB: I get comparisons to Cat Power and Regina Spektor.

ZD: What made you decided to pursue a career in music?

KW: I love to play music. I think it’s mostly the fact that it’s one of the only things I’m good at.

ZD: What is the story behind your version of “Drunken Sailor”?

KW: There’s not much of a story, really. I used to sing Drunken Sailor when I was very young, and I always liked the minor melody. I was just messing around with the song one day, and realized I could build a song around it.

ZD: What was it like making a music video?

KW: It was pretty fun! Jason Harper directed and shot the video. We shot it in April over two very cold and rainy days. It was a really good experience.

ZD: Where is the strangest place that you’ve found inspiration?

KW: I think I usually am compelled to write when I have interesting or confusing events in my own life. But aside from that, I draw from just about everything I have heard or read or seen.

ZD: What has been the raddest moment of you life?

KW: I think that being backstage at the Hollywood Bowl was pretty rad. I wish I could say I’ve gone windsurfing or something, but I tend to prefer ground-based activities.

ZD: What has been the most embarrassing moment of your life?

KW: There are so many. One that comes to mind is when I was walking onstage to play a show and tripped on the stairs. That was pretty smooth.

ZD: Have you played and live gigs lately?

KW: Yes! I just played to a sold-out crowd at Schuba’s with David McMIllin. I’ll also be playing at South by Southwest on March 20th and Subterranean on March 31st.

ZD: What one line from one of your songs best describes you?

KW: Tough one. I don’t think any lines describe me that well, since most of them are more focused on events and ideas. Even the self-referential songs are more about an idea of myself than my actual self.

To call Michael Behm a music industry renaissance man is actually something of an understatement. As an artist, he’s equally comfortable working under the spotlight or behind the scenes or in a studio, while he has found significant success as an entrepreneur in many different facets of the music business.

Twelve years of touring through North America have established Behm as a compelling live performer. To a rapidly growing number of fans around the globe, he is best known as a singer/songwriter of real melodic and lyrical intelligence. His versatile take on pop-rock has been showcased on seven albums, including 2008’s acclaimed Saving America.

Through 2009, Behm has released a series of meticulously-crafted singles that have generated serious traffic on internet radio stations and music websites. Total plays of Behm tunes on numberonemusic.com now stand at 1.5 million, while 12 songs on the popular Jango site have notched 250,000 plays. Such singles as “If I Could Learn To Fly”, “Love’s Like Numbers,” and now “Where I Belong” have topped charts in Australia and Canada on such sites as mp3.au.com and Reverb Nation.

As a music business entrepreneur, Behm’s credentials are equally solid. He formed a sound company “Premier Productions” in the 1990s that provided live sound and lighting to 22 music clubs in Canada. He owned five successful live venues / clubs, including three in the Caribbean, and he still owns and operates popular Vancouver Island music club, Voodoo Lounge. He has promoted over 100 concerts, including such major-name acts as Nazareth, Nickelback and Default.

Behm’s first recording studio, Premier Studios, located in Vancouver, hosted recording artists from the U.S., U.K., and Europe, Australia and Japan while his current home studio, right on the ocean in Qualicum, British Columbia, is recognized as a true state of the art facility. Michael also is home at top-notch Vancouver studios The Warehouse, Mushroom, The Armoury, and, working closely with such highly-regarded engineers as Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), Mike Puskas, Delwyn Brooks, Brian Gardner and Ray Harvey

On the songwriting front, Behm’s talent has been recognized by songwriting guru Ralph Murphy (Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap, Cliff Richards). A recent Murphy-Behm co-write, the gently pensive pop song “Where I Belong,” has quickly become a fan favourite. Behm and veteran songsmith Ron Irving recently collaborated on “It’s My Time,” a track that is now on hold with American Idol.

Michael Behm’s versatility as a songwriter, producer has certainly brought him attention in the world of music publishing. He has signed eight publishing deals in the last two years alone, and highly notable movie and TV placements are coming his way. Thanks to a collaboration with affiliates in the U.S. and Australia, a Behm track, ‘Living In The Moment,” will be featured in upcoming Disney feature A Fairy Tale. He was also recently commissioned to provide four songs for the soundtrack to a film biography of AC/DC singer Bon Scott.

“The instrumental aspects of those tracks have already been licensed to a U.S. network,” Behm reports. “Once you create something that’s great and that encapsulates a certain genre, there will always be a use for it. My music is available in many different platforms. The advantage I have is that I can quickly come up with music for any application. I can create it myself or commission it from other producers-that I work with.”

Behm has expanded his reach for 2010, producing and developing international artists, “Chap” and “Dead Eyes Open”. Behm says, “I have been producing this amazing U.K. country band called “Chaps”. We just signed a song “One Straight Road” to a list Publisher Rex Benson to be pitched to Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts. The song was picked from 2600 song submissions validating a production team’s hard work! “Chaps will be featured at MIDEM in my company profile.

I will also be representing “Dead Eyes Open” at Midem a young edgy metal band!

Michael is a frequent panelist at music industry conferences and seminars, continually expanding and refining his diverse skill and contacts.

A Day In The Life Of Lovespirals

In preparation for the big Lovespirals and Karmacoda Harlot Happy Hour show in San Francisco, Ryan and Anji have spent a lot of time selecting and arranging a half hour set of songs to perform. Over the weekend the duo tried playing the set using both an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar. The band have done shows either way, and they each have their merits. Anji captured some footage from a few of these practice sessions and put it up on the Lovespirals Facebook Group and Official Lovespirals You Tube Account.

Zack Daggy: What was the first album that you ever bought?

Anji Bee: I’m not sure, but the first song I remember hearing is “Here Comes The Sun” by the Beatles. I still really love George Harrison to this day.

Ryan Lum: I can’t say for sure, but I clearly remember getting Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors as a real youngster. I still love that album as much today as I did then.

ZD: Who are your influences?

AB: That’s always tough to say. I don’t really think about other musicians when I’m writing or recording music, but of course I’m always listening to music so it must be influencing me subconsciously. I always enjoy harmonizing with male voices, so I think I’ve been more musically influenced in that regard than by copying the techniques of any female vocalists.

RL: Way too many to list, but big ones that come to mind are Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Cocteau Twins, Jerry Garcia, ltj Bunkum, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Doyle Bramhall II.

ZD: Whom do people say that you sound like?

AB: On our new album people are saying we sound like Zero 7, Air and Pink Floyd mainly. As far as the vocals go, the descriptor seems to be “heavenly” rather than a vocalist comparison. I honestly don’t get many vocal comparisons, which I guess indicates that I have my own sound.

RL: They used to say the Cocteau Twins a lot in my past, but now no particular band comes up much. Some have said our new album sounds like Air and Zero 7.

ZD: If your life were a theme song, what song would it be?

AB: Like a TV theme song? I’m really not sure!

RL: The Barney Miller theme song.

ZD: What has been the raddest moment in your life?

AB: Pffft… I dunno. That is such a moving target. Rad things are happening all the time so it’s hard to quantify that with an absolute!

RL: Still waiting for it to happen.

ZD: What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life?

AB: Once again, who knows? I try NOT to think about those incidents if I can help it.

RL: ?

ZD: Where is the strangest place that you’ve found inspiration?

AB: Place? Like the bathtub? I wrote the lyrics for “feel so good” in the bathtub, but then again, I’ve written a lot of songs while taking long, hot soaks.

RL: Meditating on a high ocean cliff at sunset in the solitude of an island

ZD: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

AB: Wow I don’t even know. As a band we’ve often said it would be great to work with John Paul Jones, because he’s both an amazing keyboardist and bass player and we could really use a guy like that for our live shows. Jeff Chimenti would be awesome to work with, too, as we both really love his keyboard work. As a vocalist I suppose it would be pretty sweet to work with dance acts like Thievery Corporation or Groove Armada on something.

RL: John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.

ZD: What would be your dream gig?

AB: Gig as in live show? Or gig as in job? I think I have a pretty sweet job right now, working as podcaster with a popular show in my genre and having time to do independent music, too. As for shows, I don’t really enjoy performing live that much so I haven’t thought about that. The show we have coming up in San Fran this month is pretty sweet, because I love Karmacoda so much and it will be a dream come true to sing live with Heather and B on “Motherless Child.”

RL: Attending the Ted Conference.

ZD: Which line from one of your songs best describes you?

AB: “Back when I was younger, I never could have known I’d be where I am today. Look at how I’ve grown.”

RL: “Feels like it’s one of those days” from the song one of those days on Future Past
