“Tracks from The 88 have made waves on television, video games and online, continuing a trend The 88 initiated upon the release of their first CD Kind of Light.” ~It’s Alive! Media & Management
Zack Daggy: What is the origin story behind the formation of The 88?
Adam Merrin of The 88: The four of us have come together through very unique methods that have occurred individually and collectively, somewhat simultaneously, but truly independently, and lastly most sincerely.
ZD: Where does the name The 88 come from?
AM: Eighty-eight is a refactorable number, a primitive semiperfect number and an untouchable number. It is also a hexadecagonal number, just like the music.
ZD: How would you describe your style?
AM: Universal.
ZD: Where is the strangest place you’ve found inspiration?
AM: Inspiration can come at any time and in many different places, sometimes when you’re least expecting it. It’s a mysterious thing, you just need to be open to it. I’ve had an idea come to me in a dream. I literally stumbled out of bed and recorded it half-awake into a recorder.
ZD: One of your songs is being used as the theme for the NBC comedy series Community. How did that come about?
AM: We all have great imaginations.
ZD: Besides Community’s, what is your favorite television theme song?
AM: Popeye The Sailor Man.
ZD: What TV shows and films can we expect your music to be featured on next?
AM: I’ve always wanted to have a song in a David Lynch movie. Anyone out there have any connections?
ZD: What is your favorite song to perform and why?
AM: Lately, we’ve been playing “Leave My Kitten Alone” which the Beatles used to play in their early days. This one is a lot of fun to play!
ZD: What is in store for The 88’s future?
AM: This Thursday, we are playing a show with Liam Finn at the Echoplex in Echo Park, CA, which I am excited about. If you’ve never seen him, check out some of his live videos on YouTube.
ZD: Which line from one of your songs best describes The 88?
AM: Love Is The Thing.
