Artist Spotlight – Red Friday

“The band that invented the “Street-Rock” genre…”

Zack Daggy: What is the origin story of the band Red Friday?

Sean: Red Friday was a conceptual idea that Kevin had, three guys recording music for the love of music! We seriously didn’t know that it would grow as huge as it has, as fast as it has.

Ben: I knew, because it’s kick ass real groovish music. Hell, I’d go buy a Red Friday CD!

Zack: How would you describe your style?

Ben: Trippy. Raw. Moving. Ear Tickling. Street Rock.

Kevin: We are what you want us to be. There are so many influences and styles in our music that it can’t be pegged down to “one” style.

Sean: Fans have emailed us telling us that we sound like we have been influenced by this band or that band, We have yet to read the same band….. I mean, no one hears us the same way. As Kevin said, we are what you want us to be.

Zack: Speaking of style, the look of the Red Friday site is epic! What does the imagery on the site mean to you, and how much input did have in the overall look?

Kevin: Yeah, it does look fantastic, doesn’t it!

Sean: The guy we hired did an amazing job! We personally hand-picked the images for the website. It truly captures the essence of what we want Red Friday to be, and that is…..well, you decide!

Ben: Lust. Kevin Smith. The Magic Man. Secretly trained by famous artist. HINT: Happy Trees.

Zack: Your debut album “Nothing is Free” is ironically available for free on your site. What made you decide to give it away?

Ben: That was an accident. We are suing everyone.

Kevin: We wanted to offer our sounds for free because we understand the industry, and where it’s going… Better for us to release it for free then to try and sell it for $20, get 10 buys, and see it up for grabs on peer to peer.

Sean: Yeah, so far we’ve had like, Oh God, I don’t know, 3000 downloads world wide of the EP in like 2 ½ weeks. If we would have tried to sell this, especially as an unknown…..well, we’d still be unknown….make sense?!

Zack: How does it feel releasing your first album?

Ben: Really Fuckin Good.

Zack: What would you say is the main theme to the lyrics of your songs?

Sean: Again, whatever you want them to be. The variations of Imagery Ben uses in his lyrics is not black and white. It’s a slew of technicolor that allows you to pick which color you like and go with it…..

Ben: A reason to yell. What one may write if he were kick-in it, with kites.

Zack: Under “Performing” on your site it says “Coming Soon.” Where are you planning on performing, and where would your dream gig be?

Kevin: That information is coming soon!

Sean: (laughs) Yeah, we are currently setting up the stage show. The Band is very excited to get out, but we aren’t going to be the typical “bar band” playing the same songs you listened to on the CD earlier in the day. People don’t say “I’m going to listen to the concert tonight”, people say “I’m going to SEE the concert tonight” and we want to give them the total sense experience. Currently we are arranging….well, never mind, you’ll just have to come see!

Ben: Where ever our fans are. “If you call out our name, you know wherever we are, we’ll come runnin, just to rock you again.” Dream Gig- a Packed house. or Woodstock 09

Zack: What band would you most like to tour with?

Kevin: You mean what band would we most like to tour with us I think… (laughs). No man, I’m kidding! I haven’t really thought about it….but I know Sean has!

Ben: Tool. NIN. Zeplin. Katy Perry (for the music) pshh..

Sean: (laughs) well if we have to pay our dues, I think I’d like to open for either Depeche Mode or Evanessence. Simply because I think that our groove would go well with theirs!

Zack: What’s right and what’s wrong with the music industry today?

Sean: It’s an underlying theme of Red Friday that there is no right or wrong, just different consequences. Blame the change in the music industry on the invention of MTV…..before music videos band had to rely on their music to sell music. After MTV debuted the industry changed, and bands found themselves relying on other avenues of creativity….the music was just a part of the package….sort of like the logo on a beer bottle. You see the logo, know what kind of beer it is, but it’s what’s inside that really matters, right?

Ben: Right-Music Wrong-Industry “Video killed the radio star.”

Kevin: Sean said it! In today’s market, a band has to be creative in not just it’s music but in it’s marketing as well. The days of signing a big deal and becoming incredibly rich are over. Bands need to understand that they aren’t just a bunch of guys playing music and getting paid, they are a business, and their music is simply a marketing tool. The market is continually changing, but change is not a bad thing, if you change with it. You asked earlier why we released the EP for free? There you have it. People world wide know of, have listened to, and are fans of Red Friday…..how likely would that have been if we had released the EP for even a small amount like $5.00? You tell me.

Zack: Where would you like to see Red Friday in ten years?

Ben: Releasing Album #20. For free.

Sean: I love this question! It’s like a job interview! I believe a similar question was asked of John Lennon once about the Beatles and he said something about The Beatles being bigger then Jesus…. Red Friday will never, never have such a high ego…. although we do want to be bigger then The Beatles! (laughs). In 10 years, what we’d like to see is our fans still coming to see us!

Kevin: Still writing, still playing, and still making our fans excited about Red Friday.

Catch Red Friday On…
