“Kelly Harper mixes the sweet essence of pop along with the passion and edge of classic rock,” ~ Hard Rock Cafe Denver
Zack Daggy: When did you first discover that you had passion for music?
Kelly Harper: Ever since I was a little girl, I knew ever song on the radio. People nicknamed me “Radio Girl”.
ZD: As a young girl growing up in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, you were quite introverted. How did your introversion effect pursuing a career in music?
KH: It really affected me for a while. I was always the girl in school who didn’t want to get called on by the teacher. My shyness kept me from actually doing what I really wanted to do. It wasn’t till I got a bit older that I was really able to get in front of people. Then when I started doing shows I was like, this is easy, what was I so scared of?! Now I love it!
ZD: You also did a stint in modeling. What was that like?
KH: Modeling is a different business. I liked it when I was younger but as time passed and I matured, I realized that modeling wasn’t filling my soul. It wasn’t my passion, and life is too short not to be doing what you love.
ZD: Eventually you left your modeling career behind and moved to Los Angeles to chase your dream of being a singer/songwrtter. What was your first big break in the music industry?
KH: My first break was when I had my music placed in a movie, MTV licensed my songs, and The Oxygen network show “The Bad Girls Club” used my songs in 2 seasons.
ZD: How would you describe your style?
KH: Pop, Indie Pop.
ZD: What is your song writing process like?
KH: Each process is different with every song I do. First comes the inspiration. Then I either write lyrics or have a melody in my head. It always just starts with an idea and an inspiration for me.
ZD: Where is the strangest place that you’ve found inspiration?
KH: I don’t know if it is strange, but the bath rub is always a great place. :)
ZD: I understand that you’ll be touring soon. Do you know yet which places you’ll be playing?
KH: We are currently working on the dates and venues, I will have them posted as I have them on my myspace, so be sure to keep checking on them!
ZD: How would you describe a typical live show by Kelly Harper?
KH: Raw, Honest and Pure.
ZD: Which line from one of your songs best describes you?
KH: Ordinary Girl.
