“Collette has this rock star girl persona much like earlier Gwen Stefani or Pink for all-out glam rock. She is a red-head vixen! ” -Christy Mannering, Bring Me Up

Zack Daggy: When did EdibleRed form as a band, and who are it’s members?

Collette McLafferty of EdibleRed: We formed years ago… Tom Papadatos (drummer) and myself met through the Village Voice. He then got Sean McMechen (guitar) in the band. We are the core of the band and have rotating members on cello and bass. Usually Pablo Cubarle of Contramano and Janko Valdez, but they sometimes get rotated when they are playing with other projects. It should be noted that we have had tons of members pass through the band. One of these days we will build a “family tree” of sorts and post  it online.

ZD: How did you come up with the name EdibleRed? Were there any other names in the running?

CM: LOL, actually a fan named us. We couldn’t name the band to save our lives. We resorted to looking at signs on the streets. We came dangerously close to being named “Yesterday’s Dress”, “50 Paces” and “One Hour Photo”

ZD: How would you describe EdibleRed’s style?

CM: I usually say it’s a rock band with cello. A little rock, a little pop and some weird stuff thrown in for good measure. Some day we need to come up with a better name that encompasses all of that in one cute little catch phrase.

ZD:
You did a really unique and awesome cover of “Hey Ya.” How did that come about?

CM: I was playing a solo cover gig on Block Island. I had to learn about 4 hours worth of material. So I would play all the tunes super slow just so I could get the feel of what they were all about. When I was playing “Hey Ya” I really tuned into how sad the song  was. Andre would frequently talk about that in interviews when talking about “Hey Ya”. That was the first time I really tapped into how the song talks about the devastation of infidelity and breakups.

ZD:
You’ve shot two music videos, right? Tell me what it was like filming them.

CM: I LOVE shooting videos! I adore the process and have to be honest, I love it just as much as making music. “Hey Ya” is actually our fourth video. We did 2 independent videos before we signed to Select Records. Videos are fun because your working with creatives in other mediums: producers, directors, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists etc. I also have an acting background, which I put on the back burner for the band. So music videos are a great way to tap into that art form. The days are long, but so fun. “Hey Ya” was really special to me because it almost didn’t happen. We lost our original crew and our entire budget, but forged ahead anyway and got very creative with making it happen with director Philipp Volter. We called in a lot of favors and posted a lot of Craigslist Ads!

ZD: Any plans for future videos?

CM:
Yes! We may still make some more video off of “Welcome to MY Bad Bahavoir”. Now that the industry is truning more into a singles market then an album market, we are toying with the idea of recording songs one at a time and then making videos to each one. Most likely we will then release the collection of songs as a physical record, but for the hard core fans.

ZD: Where all have you been playing recently, and where are you planning on playing in the future?

CM: We just played the Highline Ballroom not to long ago (AMAZING venue that Paul McCartney, Carlos Santana and Amy Winehouse have all played). We also go to Holland alot… we’ve been building a scene out there.

ZD: What has been your raddest moment in life?

CM: Hmmm… it might actually be completing the Hey Ya video. I worked so hard on that. Also the night I jammed with Jeff Buckley is way up there.

ZD: What has been your most embarrassing moment in life?

CM:
Haha, now that Facebook exists I am reliving the most embarrassing moment of my life every time someone posts an incriminating photo from my past!

ZD: What line from one of your songs best describes you?

CM: “I’m hyper and I’m shakin, by this fancy I’ve taken”  I have a tendency to get obsessively behind anything I am into to the point where it becomes all consuming.
