Artist Spotlight – Cupéro

“Of the numerous striking qualities of Cupéro, the 19-year-old singer/songwriter and rocker, it’s the commanding presence of her voice and songs that sets her apart.”

Zack Daggy: Where do you currently live/perform?

Cupéro: I live in Warwick, NY in the Hudson Valley about 60 miles north of New York City. I record at The Cutting Room Studios in Greenwich Village. I perform in New York City and the surrounding area and will be performing at The Underscore on the Upper East Side next week.

ZD: How long have you been singing? Have you had any vocal training?

C: I’ve been singing since as far as I can remember! I have had vocal training for a short period of time but I discontinued it because my vocal coach emphasized classical tunes and that wasn’t my style.

ZD: Where do you most find inspiration?

C: I find my inspiration from life experiences and the people that mean the most to me. I have found the more passionate I feel about a subject, the better the song.

ZD: How has your heritage influenced your style?

C: My heritage has not had any influence on my music. However, I have always had a love for the Spanish language and culture. In fact, I am a Spanish major in college and for that reason I wanted to record a few tracks in Spanish.

ZD: You sing/write songs in two languages. From an artist’s perspective which do you prefer and why?

C: I don’t prefer one over the other, but I feel that I can express myself much differently in Spanish than I can in English. I sing with great emotion and I feel that Spanish is the vehicle that really allows me to express that. However, I intend to continue recording in both languages.

ZD: You’re in college, right? How in the world did you find enough time to record an EP?

C: We actually recorded the four English songs during last summer’s break and I recorded the two Spanish songs immediately upon completion of my freshman year in college.

ZD: Are you getting much airplay on college radio/local radio stations?

C: I attend Siena College near Albany, NY, the state’s capital. The college runs a radio station that is the home of WVCR 88.3 The Saint. My music has been played on air at that station and I was in fact interviewed by the station last Fall on their popular show, Kaleidoscope.

ZD: How does it feel having a finished EP and your music out there for everyone to hear?

C: I’m tremendously excited! I feel that I have done quality work and I look forward to the opportunity to record more music in the future.

ZD: If you could work with anyone in the music industry, who would it be?

C: Without a doubt, it would be Juanes. I admire his philanthropy, activism and his passion for his country. I have also been compared to KT Tunstall who I admire greatly and would love the opportunity to perform with her at some point in the future.

ZD: American Idol; force of good or force of evil, and would you audition?

C: For many people, American Idol is a great opportunity and I fully acknowledge that many tremendous artists have been launched through American Idol. However, it was not a fit for me because I did not feel comfortable in the “reality” genre and prefer to chart my own path to recognition.

ZD: You work with a couple charities, right? Tell me about them.

C: I have performed for Students Active for Ending Rape (SAFER) at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge at Galapagos Art Space. In high school I was asked to write a song for the organization called Road Recovery (which was extremely well received but has not yet been recorded professionally) and I have performed on several occasions at Siena at the request of Relay for Life which is an organization geared towards the diagnosis and cure of cancer. I intend to continue to support human rights and philanthropic efforts.
