Artist Spotlight – Becca

Artist Spotlight - Becca

“Born in Portland, OR, Becca has already become a staple on the international music charts, and she is now ready to do the same in the states.” ~ Sony Music Independent Network

Zack Daggy: When did you first start singing?

Becca: I can’t remember a time when I was not singing…if I was to guess an age, I’d say two.

ZD: How would you describe your style?

B: I call it Rock/Pop.  The rock definitely comes first.  My biggest influences are Cyndi Lauper, Alanis Morrissette, and Steven Tyler.  I think that comes out in my music.

ZD: I understand that Meredith Brooks discovered you. What’s the story behind that?

B: I met her through a family friend back in my hometown of Portland, Oregon when I was just about 14.  She told me if I ever had a demo that I should send it to her, so of course I couldn’t let that opportunity pass!  I sent her out a demo of a couple songs I wrote and a couple covers and I was very fortunate that she liked it.

ZD: Where does your connection to Japan originate?

B: A few scouts for Sony Japan came to a showcase of mine after we sent out my music to them.   My team and I always thought that Japan would be a good fit for me so it was definitely in the front of our minds.

ZD: You voice the lead character in the Anime movie Ultra Violet. How did that opportunity come about?

B: I sang the theme songs for the anime in Japan and they needed the English dubs.  I happen to speak English quite well and had the chance to audition!

ZD: What is Ultra Violet’s plot? Who do you play?

B: I play the lead character, 044.  044 is a clone that was created by the government for the government and her job is to destroy a group of destructive people called “phages” who carry a deadly virus.  The government injected 044 with the virus because it enhances her natural abilities and makes her more powerful.  She is a ticking time bomb though because the virus is killing her, and she realizes that she needs to find a better purpose to live for before it’s too late.

ZD: Did you watch much Anime before Ultra Violet?

B: I was definitely a fan of Anime beforehand so it was very exciting for me to be in one!

ZD: Tell me about your song I’m alive.

B: ”I’m Alive” is about living your life to the fullest, even through the hard times, because it’s the only one you’ve got!

ZD: I’m Alive is featured in the OMGPOP game Hit Machine, right? What’s it like having folks play your song in a video game?

B: It’s weird and cool all at once.  I’m honored.

ZD: On top of all this your debut US EP Kickin’ & Screamin’ comes out September 29th followed by your full length album Alive!! early next year. Considering that you accomplished all this by age 20, what do you think the next 20 years has in store for you?

B: I’m hoping to tour the world and earn a Grammy or two.  That would be a dream come true.
